DIY bookcase

Bookcase - furniture without which you can not do. Books in a special way create coziness, and give the home a warm atmosphere. Most people prefer paper analogues to e-books, and rightly so. It is always pleasant to take a volume of verses of a beloved poet from a shelf, and feel its weight in your hands, listen to the rustle of pages. Therefore, it is important to keep books in order. A bookcase will become a reliable assistant in this matter.

Nowadays, there is no such piece of furniture that could not be bought, however, when it comes to buying, it turns out that something is not right: the dimensions of the furniture do not fit, the model does not fit into the interior, or you simply don’t like a single cabinet so much that I wanted to buy it right there. In this case, you can make a bookcase yourself, saving a considerable amount. In addition, there are a number of advantages for a DIY product:

  • You will make the design strictly according to the sizes that you need;
  • the product will fit perfectly into the interior;
  • your creation will be unique, because it will be done manually and taking into account all the nuances regarding the design of your home;
  • handmade furniture lasts longer than factory furniture, because the owner does not skimp on the quality of the material and accessories.

IMPORTANT! First of all, you need to think about which particular model of the bookcase you want, think about its location and size, and only then get to work.

There are 2 types of this furniture: open and closed. The closed bookcase has doors that protect books from dust and the sun. In the open model there are no such doors.

To make a cabinet that is most suitable in size and style, you need to understand the types of such furniture. It is divided by type of assembly and method of use.

Table: types of bookcases

Assembly typeUse cases
CaseThe design can be with or without doors, contain a different number of shelves, doors can be hinged, sliding, accordion. Suitable for storing any printed matter.
ModularIt is convenient in that it is easy to assemble and disassemble, it can be equipped with additional shelves, change shape and height.
Built inThe design can be anything. In such cabinets, it is better to install sliding doors, the details of which are attached to the sides and top.
AngularA win-win option for small rooms.

Having decided to make a bookcase yourself, you need to prepare a drawing. To begin, decide what form the model will have, where it will be located, what material it is made of. Remember that it is best to place a bookcase in your study, living room, and other spacious room.

IMPORTANT! When drawing up a drawing, it is necessary to take into account not only the height and width of the product, but also the number of book blocks. All this should be reflected in the figure.

Before drawing up the drawing, check how horizontal the floor is. This is easy to do with a level. If you omit this moment, the finished product can be made with errors, and the shelves will be at an angle to the surface. If you still see that the floor is slightly sloping, decide what is easier to do: level the surface, or design the cabinet so that it subsequently stands firmly on the floor. All these nuances should be displayed in the drawing.

In order to get the most correct drawing, you need to take into account the depth of the bookshelf. The standard book has a width of 20 cm, larger volumes - 30 cm, this must be displayed in the drawing. The thickness of the bookshelf should be at least 2 cm. If the apartment has skirting boards, then the indent from it should be slightly more than 3 cm. It is also worth indicating the presence of outlets and the possibility of lighting the cabinet.

A drawing or diagram is an integral part of the manufacturing process. Therefore, the drawing up must be approached with all responsibility. Next, you need to select the material, and check the availability of all tools.

In the manufacture of the cabinet will need to do the milling of the ends. This process is not time-consuming, but it should take time:

  1. You need to choose the right milling cutters that will help in creating the perfect relief.
  2. Departure is set as clearly as possible.
  3. Milling equipment must be modern and of high quality.

There are features of milling that must be taken into account:

  1. The milling cutter must be firmly fixed.
  2. The workpiece must not deviate to the side during milling.
  3. You should not rush during the process, as the result may turn out to be bad.
  4. Reiki is processed after the optimal size is set.
  5. After all work, the parts should be treated with sandpaper to smooth out all irregularities.

For the back wall of the cabinet, you can use a sheet of chipboard, as a rule, this part of the furniture is not visible, and a simpler material is used for its manufacture.

IMPORTANT! The back wall must be fixed very firmly and evenly, how reliable the design will depend on this.

If the cabinet is designed for a large number of books, chipboard will serve as a good material for the back wall. It is easy to mount, it can withstand heavy weight.

Necessary tools and materials

Materials for the manufacture of a bookcase are selected in accordance with the selected project and the interior of the entire home. If you want the product to last for many years, use an array of natural wood: alder, cherry, oak, maple. The tree is not toxic, so it costs decent money. Furniture from particleboard and MDF may turn out to be a more budget option. In this case, the texture and color scheme are quite diverse.

For work, you may need the following materials:

  • Reiki
  • borders;
  • metal inserts;
  • glass with or without spraying.

As legs, you can use wooden bars.

Tools should also be at hand, they must be assembled before you even plan to make a cabinet. You will need:

  • electric drill with various nozzles;
  • screwdriver;
  • milling apparatus;
  • Sander.

In the process of finishing work, it is worth stocking up with this set:

  • Ruler and pencil;
  • roulette and level;
  • knives and jigsaw;
  • screws, washers, nails and a hammer;
  • brushes and paints and varnishes.

This list may vary slightly, it all depends on the selected model.

Preparatory work

All of the above points can be attributed to preparatory work. If you do not have a machine for sawing chipboard, it is best to order a saw from a specialist, as this is a rather complex process that requires a lot of attention and work experience. In the manufacture of a standard rectangular product, the ends are pasted over with veneer, or oak slats are prepared in advance, which are glued to the cabinet panels.

For shelves and sidewalls it is better to use MDF, prepare the material in advance. Also, there should be an edge of MDF 2 cm wide, 8 mm thick, do not forget about the slats.

When all the preparatory work is over, you can begin to assemble the product.

Cabinet assembly

It is necessary to assemble the structure on a flat surface in order to avoid possible distortions. The whole process is conditionally divided into several stages:

  1. Assembly should begin at the top of the cabinet.
  2. Side walls should be connected to the top.
  3. Using a drill, make holes for fasteners. For fastening parts it is best to use confirmants, also steel angles are used as additional elements.
  4. Shelves need to be fixed after the lower part is ready. Shelves firmly pressed and fixed.

At the end, you should install the back wall and fasten with a common frame.

IMPORTANT! For a bookcase, experts do not recommend the use of removable shelves.

Fasteners can be used in a variety of ways: nails, self-tapping screws, construction stapler. It all depends on the materials and configuration of the product.
